Program Payments and Insurance Coverage
The cost of different medications used in medication assisted treatment (MAT) varies. The Affordable Care Act requires most insurers to cover addiction treatment benefits, but that may soon be overturned.
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) requires health insurers and group health plans to provide the same level of benefits for behavioral health services that they do for primary care.
Keep in mind that not all insurance plans cover every available addiction treatment medication. Some plans also put a cap on the number of dosages and prescription refills a MAT patient receives.
